A recent study by Dr. So and associates looked to compare the effectiveness of preventing infection and the rate of wound complications associated with chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) and povidone-iodine (Betadine) lavage. Four hundred and ten total joint replacements were included in the study. Patients for whom CHG was utilized as the antiseptic irrigation had a statistically significant lower 30 and 90-day emergency room readmission rate due to wound complications as well as a lower rate of postoperative superficial drainage and dressing saturation at clinic follow-up. This study suggests CHG may be as efficacious as Betadine in preventing periprosthetic joint infection while also decreasing the risk of superficial drainage and wound complications needing unplanned ER visits during the acute postoperative period.
